Sochi! Olympic time!
Aren’t the Olympics one of the coolest events on the planet?
I think so! Every country comes together to play at one time and it only happens every 4 years. What’s even cooler is that it brings communities, families and countries together! American’s are shouting USA-USA-USA! I’m not sure there is anything cooler than that.
When I was in fifth grade I did a state report on Georgia. I remember being disappointed because I wanted to do California, or Hawaii or Nevada, but no... I got stuck with Georgia. Here I was, all disappointed... and little did I know the blessing in disguise. It was 1996. I was in fifth grade, I had just started pitching in January, and that state report was due in May. I was 12 years old.
Little did I know the impact of the statement below that my mom and my catcher, Julie Abbott convinced me to put in the report.
1996, 2000, 2004, 2008 (Summer Olympics)
- All had Softball in them. Only. 4. Olympic. Games.
2012, 2016 (Summer Olympics)
- No Softball.
2014 (Winter Olympics Sochi, Russia)
- A Last Chance Vote and appeal for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
2020 (Summer Olympics, Tokyo, Japan)
- 6 years away.
Japan is rich in Baseball and Softball. With the likes of Yu Darvish, Masahiro Tanaka, Ichiro Suzuki, Eri Yamada, Schiko Itoh, and Yukkio Ueno. Japan goes crazy for Softball and Baseball. Believe me, I play there, as I'm about to begin my 6th year with Toyota. The Japan Softball League (JSL) is one of the best, if not the best, league in the world. Baseball is just as exciting there. Stadiums are built already so that shouldn’t be a concern and they come in with a predisposed built in fan base.
The Real Question is:
Will Tokyo 2020 officials be able to convince International Olympic Committee (IOC Officials) to include Softball and Baseball in 2020? A sport that Japan has a high chance to medal in. A sport that Nihonjin love.
