ROSEMONT, Ill. – Chicago Bandits GM, Aaron M. Moore, has announced the re-signing of pitching ace Monica Abbott for the upcoming 2015 season. This season will be Abbott’s fifth playing in a Bandits uniform.
Drafted by the Washington Glory out of the University of Tennessee in 2007, she spent time with the USSSA Pride and Tennessee Diamonds before signing with the Bandits as a free agent in 2011. Through the years, Abbott has maintained her dominance in the circle and looks to continue that once again in 2015 with the Bandits.
“Signing Monica for her fifth season in a Bandits uniform was a big priority for us this offseason,” said Moore. “She is arguably the top one or two pitchers in the world and gives us a great chance to return to the championship series this summer in Hoover, Ala.
“Moni signing really helps solidify our pitching staff for this season. We have a solid 1-2-3 punch in the circle with her, Michelle (Gascoigne) and Sara Moulton.”
During her first season as a Bandit, Abbott was named 2011 Co-Pitcher of the Year, eventually leading the organization to their second Cowles Cup Championship. Since then, she received NPF Pitcher of the Year honors following the 2012 season and has been named to the All-NPF team in four consecutive seasons. In addition, she is a two-time Pitcher of the Year winner at the Bandits end of season banquet. Each award given out during the banquet is voted on solely by the fans.
“I’m excited to be back with the Bandits and look forward being in the circle helping the team win ball games and entertaining the Bandits fans,” exclaimed Abbott. “I’m happy to be back to compete in the Orange and Black for the Chicago Fans.”
This past season, Abbott allowed a combined total of just eight hits with 15 strikeouts through her first three appearances in the circle for the Bandits. She closed out the season with a four-game winning streak, to finish at 10-5 on the year. Her 122 strikeouts were good for second overall in the league, while her 1.26 ERA and 10 wins put her among top three of all pitchers in the NPF.
